Damn.

Cage couldn’t believe he had let his anger get so out of control; but as Cameron hurled one angry insult at Monae after another, he’d had to do something. Cage was the reason they were in this predicament. He should have resisted the urge to make Monae his, but the temptation had been too great. The sex they’d had was the best he’d ever experienced. But it had felt significant, even more momentous than that.

Now, he had to face the music.

His grandfather was patching up Cameron’s nose while his mother and father were sweeping up the remains of his mother’s prized china collection. She’d had it for as long as he could remember. It had been passed down from his great grandmother to his grandmother to his mother, and he’d ruined it. Just like he managed to ruin everything in his life.

When his parents were done, they turned their furor on him. “Have you nothing to say for your actions?” Cal asked.

“What do you want the boy to say, for chrissakes?” Grandfather Carter said. “He led with his pecker instead of his other head.”

“Don’t be crass, Carter,” Camilla chastised as she walked toward Cage. “But I would like to hear an answer to your father’s question.”

“Quite frankly, I don’t owe any of you, other than Cameron, an explanation. This is between me, him, and Monae and should have never been brought to this family. But I am sorry, Mama, that Grandma’s china was broken because of me.”

“Is that really all you’re going to say?” his father asked. “You really can be a son of a bitch.”

“Cal!” Camilla glanced around the room. “What’s gotten into all of you? That’s not how we treat each other in this family. We don’t throw sucker punches, and we certainly don’t call each other out of our names.” She looked at her husband and youngest son.

“I don’t have to stay and listen to this,” Cage said and started toward the door, but Caden blocked him. Cage wasn’t going to apologize for being with Monae. He was just sorry that Cameron had seen them before they had time to figure out where this was even going.

“Don’t run, Cage,” Cameron said. “That’s what you always do. Stay and explain yourself.”

Cage snatched his arm away. “Why? So you all can stand in judgment of me because you’re so righteous? I don’t think so. I’ve always known I was the bad seed, the misfit of this family. Nothing else I have to say will change that.”

“That’s not true, Cage,” Camilla said.

“C’mon, Mama. Be honest. I have never been the son you wanted, and that’s okay. I made my peace with it, but at the very least I need you to own up to it.”

“I love you, Cage,” she said. “I always have.”

“Just not like Cameron or even Caden, for that matter.”

“Seriously?” Cameron said. “You’re really going with the ‘woe is me’ card after what you’ve done?”

“What did I do that was so bad? Take a woman you didn’t want and had just discarded.
